Volunteers work to create a pathway completely around the perimeter of the island, making possible the ceremonial opening of the Makahiki, the season of Lono. In that ceremony, a representation of Lono is carried around an island in a clockwise direction. The opening of the Makahiki coincides with the first appearance of the Plaedies, the Makaliʻi star cluster.
