This crater was made by two blasts of 500 tons of TNT in 1965 by the Navy in an attempt to mimic and study the effects of a nuclear bomb. Ships were moored nearby. The effect of the blasts on the islandʻs groundwater is disputed, but the water in the crater used to be brackish and is now entirely salt.
