Its name translates as "the path to far lands." The traditional departure place for voyages to the south. Modern sailors confirm that winds and currents make this an ideal place for departure. According to some accounts, the prominent line of pōhaku that used to extend out into the sea were used as target practice and destroyed by the US Navy.
